Environmental Protection and Ecological Conservation ●
In order to keep in line with the international carbon reduction trend, the assessment of the carbon footprint of products has been comprehensively carried out. In 2022, a total of 21 product carbon footprint and third-party verifications have been completed, including petrochemicals, solvent chemicals and lubricants. From 2023 to 2024, an inventory of approximately 506 major products across the company will be completed. From 2018 to 2022, we completed risk assessments for climate change-related strong wind and flooding projects at 25 energy facilities (refineries, liquefied natural gas plants, oil supply centers, and gas supply centers). The updating of risk assessment reports for seven energy facilities has been implemented in 2023, and adaptation strategies will be developed for high-risk facilities in the future.
Air Pollution Reduction and Water Use Efficiency Enhancement
The main sources of air pollutant emissions from CPC are refineries and petrochemical plants, including total suspended particulates (TSP), sulfur oxides (SOx), nitrogen oxides (NOx), and volatile organic compounds (VOCs). In order to improve air quality, CPC has implemented 37 air pollution improvement plans from 2017 to 2031. It is expected that after the completion of the plan, TSP will be reduced by 10.0%, SOx will be reduced by 32.0%, NOx will be reduced by 16.4%, and VOCs will be reduced by 15.4%. In response to the risk of water shortage and optimizing water efficiency, high-efficiency equipment is used to optimize the water recycling and reuse. The average number of times each drop of water is used in the refining and petrochemical plants will be 8.37 times in 2023. The average water recovery rate of the above three plants will be approximately 98%, and in order to expand water sources, Dalin Refinery has purchased 10,000 metric tons of recycled water for use every day starting from 2022.
Recognition for Excellence: Pollution Remediation Award
Since the promulgation of the Soil and Groundwater Pollution Remediation Law, CPC has initiated improvement work in dealing with soil and groundwater pollution, established a dedicated unit to coordinate and manage the prevention and control of underground environmental pollution, and actively developed and applied biological remediation technologies. By the end of 2023, a total of 53 contaminated sites have been released from the control of the competent authorities, indicating a high degree of determination for remediation. In recent years, green construction methods have been adopted for remediation work. Wugu Station, Hsinchu Oil Supply Center and Taichung Oil Supply Center were awarded the Ministry of Environment’s Green and sustainable remediation (GSR) Excellent Unit Award in 2023.
